FORGO THE SLUTTY COSTUME THIS HALLOWEEN

Please excuse my use of the word "slutty". It is, however unfortunate, the word to accurately describe most Halloween costumes and the word that girls typically use to describe the look they are going for. I promise... no offense is intended!

I know your reasoning. You are young. You are only in college for four or five years. This is your first Halloween out of your parents' house. All of your friends are doing it. I know!! At some point in her college career, every single sorority girl has gone through the same thought process. You want to wear your sexy costume because like they said in Mean Girls, "Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it."

Unfortunately, that is true. However, it is still embarrassing the next day. No matter how cute you think you may look in your Miley VMA costume, there are so many reasons you should keep on more clothes than you think. Your reputation is a pretty important reason to keep your clothes on for one. On November 1 when all of the pictures get posted on Instagram you will forever be one of those girls. I am not saying you are a bad person if you dress sexy on Halloween. All I'm saying is that you have to be prepared for those pictures.

Your actions affect others. I have younger siblings and I would die of humiliation if they saw me dressed as Miley from the VMAs. I don't want them to think I am okay with them dressing like that in a few years. Even if you don't have younger siblings, there is someone who looks up to you. Just think about those kids at home that you babysit over winter break and during the summers.

Also, you are completely forgetting the best part of Halloween - creativity. There are not many nights a year that you can get away with dressing however or like whoever you want. Now is your chance! Break the mold by dressing like the Midas Touch or your favorite pop star (Katy Perry, anyone?).

Take it from me. I dressed as a sexy bumblebee one year (because all of my friends were doing it) and really wish I would have never gone there. It was fun in theory, but once we got to the party and went our separate ways it was really awkward. I would have preferred people laughing at my wit rather than feeling uncomfortable all night.

So let's raise the Halloween standard by forgoing our slutty Halloween costumes and embracing our creativity!

For the record:
I think guys should take this into consideration as well. There is nothing cool about dressing like a One Night Stand.

  1. Great post! I totally support all the reasons you give for not taking the slutty route, although I also think people shouldn't be shamed for their decisions. People! Do what you want, but think about the fact that your little sister's facebook friends are going to see it! If that honestly doesn't bother someone, that's their call I guess.

(I for one dressed up as sexy Wendy Davis this year. wit AND overdone sex appeal. It was fabulous).
