A couple of weeks ago I was traveling and had a connection through the Atlanta airport. If you know anything about that airport, then you know the best way to get around is the tram that connects the terminals. Seriously... walking from terminal to terminal is crazy. Anyway, I jumped on the tram and while catching my breath looked around at the people around me. It was then that I noticed one of my Sisters was on the tram. There she was, wearing the same letters I have worn hundreds of times before. It is a little cheesy, but for a moment I didn't feel so alone in that huge airport.
I never got the chance to talk to her (primarily due to the fact that I was terrified of walking while on the tram and then I had to depart soon), but it really made me think of how many times I have met Sisters just out and about. There is something different about randomly meeting a Sister rather than at an organized event like an alumnae meeting.
The first time it happened to me I was at the mall with some of my pledge sisters. I was wearing letters and an older woman came up and asked me if I was a member. I replied that I was and she told me that she was also. She was even from my chapter! I was just a baby freshman, freshly initiated, and that feeling really stuck with me.
We hold our letters and sisterhood so close to our hearts that it is amazing to see someone else showing that same pride. The more I do my job, the more I get to meet fraternity men and sorority women which is absolutely phenomenal, but there is something so spectacular about coming in contact with your own Sister.
One of my favorite features on my blog is the Sorority Bloggers page. Every week or so I get a handful of emails from sorority women wanting to be added to the list. I think it is so neat to not only see how many of my Sisters are bloggers, but also being able to provide that connection for you all. Our little blogging community is so small that it is wonderful to find Sisters who share our beliefs and values.
If you are a new sorority member, just wait for the opportunity to meet a Sister outside of your chapter! It will happen at the most random time (i.e. in an airport or at the mall) and make you remember why you hold your sorority so close to your heart.
Have you ever randomly met a Sister? Tell us about it in the comments below!
I'm in the Gamma Xi chapter of Delta Phi Epsilon at Rhode Island College, and at my brother's graduation from University of Miami, I met a bunch of sisters from their chapter! (:
ReplyDeleteI meet sisters all the time but I love when it's somewhere random. I met another ADPi at the dance studio once in Atlanta and it made my day!
ReplyDeletePS I haven't looked at that sorority bloggers tab in a while. It looks like I have some following to do! :)
