PREFERENCE STYLE | PRIM & PROPER

It's time for another look in the Preference Style series! This week is nothing too different (like we had here), but it does move away from the traditional LBD while still capturing the sincerity of the Preference round.

I really love this look! I have heard so many great things about both the dress and shoes (which are not going out of style anytime soon) and love the bonus accessories to really dress it up.

p.s. If you are considering buying this dress, hurry! J.Crew just restocked it and it will not last long. Also, the sandals are now on sale!

PREFERENCE STYLE | LITTLE BLACK DRESS

Last month I did a post on a very different look for the Preference Round for recruitment. For this installment, I thought I would go a little more traditional and touch on the LBD. For chapters and PNMs the LBD is the staple for the Preference Round.
The great thing about LBDs is that they come in so many styles, lengths, necklines, patterns, and more. I have pulled a ton of options for you to browse through. Some things to consider when wearing a LBD for pref:

you can dress it up with pearls or diamonds
add a fun pop of color with a statement necklace
go high or low with the heels
Of course be sure to take some adorable pictures with your Sisters!

The best thing about wearing a black dress for Pref is that once you have it, you have a wonderful dress for years to come. It is always appropriate to wear an LBD.

PREFERENCE STYLE | TRENDY CHIC

It is so hard to believe that people are beginning to get geared up for Recruitment. Something I have been wanting to do is to show PNMs other options for recruitment attire other than the typical black dress. While the little black dress is great, it doesn't capture everyone's personality or make everyone feel comfortable. This option is super different, but I know there is someone out there who would love to wear this for pref!

P.S. How cute are those glitter sandals?

STAND UP

At AFLV I attended a lot of Panhellenic-oriented sessions. These sessions give students the opportunity to hear from fraternity and sorority professionals about current trends and to voice concerns of issues happening on their campus. One of the things I heard over and over was that sorority leaders were sick and tired of fraternities hosting parties with inappropriate names. To be honest, I am not at all surprised that the gentlemen that comprise our fraternities are hosting parties with names like (please excuse my language) "Golf Pros and Tennis Hoes," "Tops or Bottoms," and, my personal favorite (read: sarcasm) "Joggers and Rapists."

Are you kidding me?

Yes, I understand that you are mad and offended because I literally felt my stomach turning as I heard the names of these parties. Guys (because frankly they do not deserve to be called gentlemen with behavior like this) think it is cool to host parties with names like these because they see this behavior displayed on TFM. But the biggest revelation of all came while I was attending a fraternity session.

I was sitting next to the sweetest fraternity man you have ever met. He is telling me about all the great things his fraternity does and then we begin talking about parties. He rattles off some mildy offensive party names. I advise him that these names are probably not a good idea because they perpetuate negative stereotypes among our organizations. This sweet young man looks at me and says...

"We keep having them because the girls come."

Ladies, I am going to spell this out for you right now. Men are simple. If you talk about hockey, they will think you like hockey. If you go to an inappropriately named party, they will think you like the inappropriate name of the party. They have your buy-in. You may have received a t-shirt that you wear occasionally. You probably posed for some pictures that you were tagged in on Facebook that you future Little will see and she will go to the same party next year because adores you and has been looking forward to it since she creeped on you last semester.

The sweet fraternity man then looks at me and says, "If the girls didn't come, we wouldn't have the parties."

It is that simple.

Do not support fraternities who have these parties. You do not go. Do not let your Sisters go. Do not let your Little go. If you are in a position of leadership, encourage your chapters members to not attend. Tell your Panhellenic Sisters that you think this is a bad idea and ask them to ask their Sisters not to go.

Don't go and maybe that fraternity will stop having that party and eventually giving their other parties inappropriate names. And your campus and community will stop perceiving sorority women as uneducated and highly sexually active because you finally took a stand.

This post has come across more as a rant, but the actions needed to change the stereotypes associated with our organizations begin with us, not the public. We have to stand up and do something or no one else will.

P.S. I realize this is not the most Valentinesy post. Here is something a little better to soothe your heart.

ACCESSORIZE PREF

I love accessories so much! If you look at my Currently Obsessed you will see that my most curated items are accessories. The Preference Round is a great time to work accessories into your wardrobe during Recruitment. Typically, your chapter asks you to wear a certain color and possibly even the same dress as your Sisters. You are left to make it your own with your accessories!

When I made the outfit above, I wanted to make it as simple to follow as possible. Therefore, I assigned each type of item a number to follow along!

1. You are going to always start with your dress. Take your dress into consideration when deciding what type of accessories you would like to use. This dress is very simple and allows for many options. However, if you had a dress with a beaded neckline, you would probably forgo on a necklace.

The dress also dictates the look you are going for. I feel as though the dress above is very classic, so I chose classic, but modern pieces to accompany the dress.

2. Bracelets! I love bracelets so much. Up until recently, they were not a huge thing for me, but there are so many cute options available. Pick a color scheme and incorporate that into your bracelets. A colorful bracelet is a great way to add a subtle pop of color to your outfit for the day.

3. Shoes. For this outfit, I drew from the bow bracelet for my shoe choice. I chose flats because Pref is going to be a long and tiring day. The last thing you want to worry about is your feet hurting.

4. Necklace. As I stated before, not all dresses will need a necklace, but this one definitely does. For pref, I feel like you do not want anything that is too distracting so opt for a more demure choice. It will keep your talking partner's eyes on you instead of examining your neckline.

5. Earrings. As much as I love earrings, it is the last choice for me, because it depends on so many things. If you are not wearing a necklace, I say to go for a larger earring. Also, carry out the color scheme you selected when choosing your bracelets. For this outfit, I chose these pearl earrings, because I had to the pearl and gold bow bracelet, but no other pearls. The earrings help tie the overall look together.

What are your favorite accessories? What style will you go for on Pref?

PREFERENCE FOR LESS THAN $90

You may think that it is impossible to look cute for your Preference Round for less than $150, but I am going to show you that you can do it for less than $90!

I love the color and style of this dress! It definitely needs a statement necklace and I think black it too perfect to go with the belt and shoes. A colorful dress is a fun way to add some color since black is typically worn for Pref. Reversing a black dress for black accessories keeps that classic feel without going overboard on color too!
