I am so excited about this post! Amanda sent it to me last month and I have been waiting for the right time to post it. Today is my first day back to work which means you all will be going back to school very soon! (Please don't hate me for bringing that up.) I think getting involved in chapter is something a lot of people struggle with and thankfully it is a new year and a new beginning. Amanda offers some great tips and I hope you all take them to heart!

Getting involved with your sorority can be a daunting task especially during your first semester. Stepping up during your second semester is crucial to getting involved and really showing what you can do in your sorority. It's important that you do this as soon as you can so that people can get to know you and you can find a proper place in your sorority. Part of the amazingness of sororities is that they offer so many people chances to get more involved as well as leadership experience.
There are a few things that you can do to make sure that people in your sorority know you are serious about becoming a leader and about getting as involved as possible. Here are some ideas on how to get involved during your second semester.
1. Speak in meeting | This is not to say speak a lot, but speak profoundly. Make sure that you are contributing to the discussions of chapter meetings so that people know you are there and also so that people can get a taste of your speaking ability. Make sure that the words you say make sense, move the conversation forward, and are well-formulated responses.
2. Volunteer | The best way to make people know that you are awesome and you mean it is volunteering. Does a sister need help with a banner? Volunteer. Does your sorority need door greeters for an upcoming alumnae event? Volunteer. Do you need an extra person on the intramural team? Volunteer. Volunteering your time is the best thing you can give your sorority - honestly!
On another note, if you volunteer to do something, always do it. If you aren't sure that you can commit to the event 100%, don't sign up. It gives you a bad track record if you constantly volunteer for things and never do what you say you will do.
3. Hold a chair position | Chair positions are usually considered once a semester. Chair positions are usually a little easier to hold than officer positions and cover a wider area of things. Chair positions are super fun and allow you to be a leader in your sorority without being on the officer team. Consider holding a chair position in something that you love to do and show a lot of passion for it!
4. Go to events that aren't mandatory | Anyone can attend events that are mandatory. It shows real dedication when you can carve time out of your day to do things that aren't mandatory. Go to all the things that you can go to, and go to a diverse amount of things. You may have different crowds of people who life to go to certain events so make sure you are going to different events to meet different people.
5. Hang out with sisters | Hanging out with your sisters outside of chapter meetings and events is another wonderful way to show your dedication to the sisterhood. If you take classes with a sister, even unintentionally, make sure you actually get to know them. If you go to the student center, invite a sister to go with you. Just go out of your way to meet your sisters if you have the time. This will show that you are really dedicated to getting to know the sisters around you.

Jen here. This post is so true and speaks volumes to how I personally went about getting involved in my sorority. My favorite thing that Amanda mentioned was taking class with sisters. If I hadn't gone out of my way to get to know my sisters in classes I never would have had the experience I had. I actually met the President of my sorority the first day of my freshman year in class. She kept egging me on to join and eventually became my Bid Day buddy. I got to know all of her friends and met my big because of that interaction!
Thanks again to Amanda for the great post! You can see her other contributions here and here. If you would ever like to contribute to the blog, just email me!
How did you get involved in your sorority?
This is an excellent post! I'm a little biased, though, as I'm actually a sister in Amanda's chapter, but I just wanted to say that everyone would benefit from having an Amanda in their sorority as she always has the best ideas and often strives to volunteer for everything that she can. Thanks for the post!
