Bid Day is a thing of that past and you have about 50 new Facebook friends because you now have the best new member class ever! So what do you do with them now?
Well those of us that our members of NPC sororities have the luxury of having a new member plan outlined for us. It is THE BEST because they have made it easy for us to follow a guide so we get to focus on making these new members feel at home in their new sorority. We don't have to get creative by developing the agenda for the new member meeting every week. In fact, inter/national organizations frown upon deviation from the new member program they have created.
So since you don't have to worry about coming up with boring meeting agendas you get to focus your energy on making this the best experience possible for your new members. As chapter members it is your job to get these new members from Bid Day to Initiation. The new member period is not for weeding out your new members it is for developing these women into shining examples of what it means to be a member of your sorority!
I think the best way you can do this is by making a point to get to know them and letting them get to know you. Yes, there will be some new members you are closer to (littles), but that doesn't mean that you cannot branch out. Also, even though you may not be New Member Ed doesn't mean that you cannot teach or review information about your sorority with them. Remember how excited you were when you were a new member any time you learned something new? Share your favorite facts or a little history! Use your sisterhood events to learn new things about them to find other activities you both love!
The best thing you can do right now is show pride in your sorority and help create that pride in your new members.

I love getting to know our new members through inviting them to lunch or dinner! This year we have a new program part of our new member classes called "Head Ivy". We're bringing in older members who are not taking a Little and allowing them to facilitate small group discussions/activities with the new members. My school's bid day is in 2 weeks and I can not wait!!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog--I graduated from college in 2012 and miss my sorority so much!
