Being in a sorority is an expensive, but very fun experience. If you are going through formal recruitment, it can be one of the first expensive roadblocks you face on the road to finding your perfect fit in Greek life. Formal recruitment doesn't have to break the bank, and I am going to show you some ways to skimp on cash without skimping on the quality of your clothes:
Know What Is Required | A lot of waste can be cut down if you take the time to know what is exactly required of you when it comes to formal recruitment shopping. The following items will almost always be a must - a nice blouse, skirt, a pair of jeans/shorts (depending on your school), as well as a few nice dresses that are kind of formal.
Raid Your Closet | You may not have to buy five new outfits for formal recruitment. The biggest thing is that the clothes you have look nice and that you feel comfortable in them. There is no need to buy new clothing if the clothing you have will suffice.
Swap Clothes | If you have a friend that is the same size as you, try taking a look at their closet. You can both trade for things you need. Do you need a black dress, and they have two? Ask to swap! In return you can lend them one of the many pairs of heels you have.
Use Your Student Discount | There are a ton of companies that love to give out student discounts to you! You can also ask your local companies if they offer a student discount. Ten percent may not seen like a lot, but it is when you are shopping for a few different pieces.
Try On Your Clothes | If you can, go to the stores that you intend to buy from and try on the clothes, even if you buy it online later. Hardly anyone actually likes to go return things, so it's just easier if you don't have to hassle with it. Plus having to buy new clothes to replace to ones you didn't return just wastes money.
Thrift Shops | While for the most part, it will not be that appealing you can actually find some pretty nice deals in thrift shops. Past the nasty blue jean couch there is a least a nice accessory that no one will have on and for cheap.
Comparison Shopping | There are a ton of great apps for your phone for comparison shopping. If the item you are looking at is sold many different places, check to see if you can find it cheaper. If the location you are buying it at is the cheapest location - pick it up!
I hope these tips are helpful to you as you seek out your clothing for formal recruitment. Shopping for formal recruitment does not have to drain your savings account!
