As summer internships are wrapping up, fall internships are on the horizon! So many people do an out-of-state internship during the summer which means you have to be completely strategic about what to pack. One of my friends did a month long internship and packed two huge suitcases and shipped herself three boxes of clothes and shoes. I felt like that was a little excessive, but she made it work!
Fall internships seem to be easier when it comes to what to wear because you are most likely at school and all of your stuff is already there. I did a couple of fall and spring internships and I definitely had my "uniform".
I hate pants so I basically live in a pencil skirt or dress of some kind. When I really want to dress it up I go with the pencil skirt look.
I always always always carried a cardigan with me. It never fails that it is freezing in the office you work in. These are my favorite.
Unless your internship requires it (ahem... Capitol Hill) wear flats! You will be running all over the place and there is no need to try to put on a brave face with heels. You have way more important things to worry about.
Finally, invest in a good tote bag. There is a reason so many people swear by the Longchamp Le Pliage. It is by far the sturdiest, most put together tote that I have found. I have one that I pretty much carried every single day for the past two years and it is still in amazing condition. (Fun fact: you can wash them) They also come in a ton of great colors!
