SPRING RECRUITMENT FROM REGISTRATION TO BID DAY: WHAT TO EXPECT
Spring Recruitment is just as different as Fall Recruitment. There are the large early rushes that are popular throughout the large universities that happen the week before or the first week of school. There are also "delayed" recruitments that happen a little later in the semester, usually around September. The same goes for Spring Recruitment. Some schools hold recruitment the first week back in January or a little later in February. There are also schools that have only open recruitment. I am going to touch on what all of this means for those of you participating in Spring Recruitment.
Registration
First you need to research the registration process. Some registrations have been open for a couple of months now. Others will wait until the week before or of the recruitment process. Some may ask that you just complete an application and pay a fee to be considered for recruitment. Check with your school's Greek Life office to see what your school does specifically.
Recruitment Events
The number of recruitment events are going to vary based on how many people participate in the process and how many chapters are on your campus. As a PNM, it is important for you to know the rounds there are and the attire that is needed for each round. The first few rounds require that you dress more casually and progresses as you go along to dressy. Here are some coat ideas for your wintery rush.
It also important for you to be prepared to talk during these events. This sounds like a big duh, but be conscious of what you are going to talk about before you go into the events. Prep yourself by reviewing your résumé so you have a fresh mind of good talking points. Don't forget to smile!
Finally, between each round you will be making selections of the chapters you want to visit. You should know that the chapters are also making selections of who they would like to invite back. It is a mutual selection process which means invitation lists are completely based on everyone participating in the process. If you are invited back to a chapter that you did not select, don't get discouraged. Go in and stay cheery. The best piece of advice I can give you is that chapters talk to each other. Everyone has friends in other chapters and you do not want anyone relaying you had the best time in chapter A to someone in chapter B, which you are in love with. Always keep the same persona amongst the chapters. They are doing the same for you.
Continuous Open Recruitment (COR)
Schools do COR differently. Some only have the open recruitment process without specified rounds of recruitment. That means that each chapter determines their own events and times of the events. Some campuses host COR after the formal recruitment process is over to get to know more women and ultimately offer more bids. If your campus is not hosting a formal recruitment, it does not mean that no chapters are recruiting. Check with your Greek Life office to see if anyone is recruiting.
Bid Day
You have finally made it to the day! Today you will receive a bid from a sorority. There will be cheering, balloons, cake, and lots of pictures! Take a little time to make sure your hair and makeup are done. You will always love and remember your Bid Day pictures!
If any of you participated in Spring Recruitment, share your experience below.
