MISS CONGENIALITY

I know the Miss America pageant was two weeks ago now, but ever since this has been weighing heavily on my heart. First off, I want to apologize for the live-tweeting I did that evening. I love love love the Miss America pageant. That, mixed with tweets from other Panhellenic Sisters, fueled that fire that ended up being close to 20 tweets in a two hour period. Oops. However, I did get a reply tweet from Alpha Delta Pi (yes the HQ) so that was positive!

It was hard to keep up with all of our sorority sisters that were picked to be in the Top 16. I know there were several of us rooting for Miss South Carolina (a member of Alpha Delta Pi), Miss  Oklahoma, and Miss Wyoming (both members of Delta Delta Delta). I love the Panhellenic spirit that was displayed on both Twitter and Facebook.

I really think one of the unsung surprises of the pageant is the Miss Congeniality announcement. Who doesn't love the movie with Sandra Bullock? I would think they would make a much bigger deal out of it consider everything it stands for, but alas Miss Congeniality is announced backstage after the pageant. Miss Congeniality is known as the most genuine, helpful, and friendly of all of the other contestants. She is also selected by the other contestants. This year it was announced that Miss Arkansas (a member of Chi Omega) was selected as Miss Congeniality.

To me, it makes sense that this honor would be bestowed upon a Panhellenic Sister. All of the ideals that encompass the title are what we strive to work towards every day through the promises we made to our sorority and other Sisters. I know there are very few of us that have competed in pageants, but what if we made a promise to start living like we pledged? I think it would be great for all of us, as Panhellenic women, to be known as Miss Congenialities. I am not encouraging you to be fake by any means, but I think it does wonders for not only those around you, but also your self to smile a little brighter, listen a little more, and stick your neck out a little further.

  1. LOVE this post. Miss Congeniality is my favorite movie and I think trying to live in a way that is kind, genuine, and helpful is something we can all aspire to.
